Just like the rest of the internet, I have been marketed to try those DIY face masks recipes that promise to give us glorious results. In my younger and naive days, I have even tried a few, which I TOTALLY cringe about, every time I think about it! Thankfully I was lazy and didn’t use these masks more than once or twice because if I did, my skin would probably hate me now.
Recently, I did a blog post on natural ingredients DIY masks for every skin type (check it out here:5 DIY Masks to solve your worst skin problems ) because I truly love doing DIY masks, however, it is important to remember that just because something is good for your body and is natural doesn’t mean that it is good for your skin too. Thanks to the internet, we have access to many misguided information that can be dangerous for us. So it is important to fact check everything, specially when it comes to skin. Here I have collected a list of ingredients to never try on your skin and what you should safely use instead!

AHHHH! The one I am most guilty of using. It is just so believable! We often associate lemon with fresh, squeaky clean or brightening but I’m afraid that although lemon is delicious and beneficial in our food and cleaning products, it does the opposite for our skin. It’s true that lemon will brighten your skin TEMPORARILY, however, the cost of using lemon on your face outweighs benefits. Lemon is highly acidic and ruins the natural ph balance of our skin which results in dry skin and ruining your natural lipid layer.
What to use instead: If you want to brighten your skin, try vitamin C serums! Like this one: InstaNatural Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin E Not only does this give you a brightening and glowing complexion and get rid of dark spots but also gives anti aging benefits!
I remember this being really huge a couple of years ago, I had seen people use toothpaste on spots or worst just all over the face (*CRINGE CRINGE CRINGE*). Toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulphate, mint and other chemical that just not good for your skin and the results can be extremely damaging to your skin (over dry skin, brown/red spots). Just leave toothpaste for your teeth, please!
What to use instead: Try using a clay mask like this supper affordable yet powerful one:Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing, 1 Pound (use it all over the face or for spot treatments.) For faster results try this wonderful drying lotion: Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, 1 fl. oz. (for spot treatments)
I see this one floating around for many reasons from blackheads to wrinkles. First of all, it is important to understand that it is NOT possible to exfoliate out wrinkles so not only is this not helping your skin but it is harming it in many ways. Baking soda is highly alkaline meaning that it will mess up the PH balance of your skin (causing extreme dryness or oiliness) and damage the lipid layer of your skin, a skin barrier that helps protect our skin from environmental factors. The correct way to exfoliate your skin is doing it gradually, over time!
What to try instead: Leave the baking soda for the baking and scrubbing pots and pans and use this natural, eco-friendly gently exfoliators! Mystic Moments Jojoba Beads For Face Exfoliant 100G
I have seen alcohol recommended for oily skin, blackheads and to remove left over make up in place of a toner but truth is that alcohol/ mouthwash are so bad for your skin that not only should you avoid straight up alcohol on the face but also avoid skin products that contain alcohol in the ingredient list. Alcohol leads to skin irritation and again damaged lipid layer. Bottom line avoid alcohol at ALL cost!
What to use instead: Use this Simple tone which is soothing to the skin and contain no hard irritants. Simple Kind to Skin Soothing Facial Toner (200ml)
Olive oil/ Coconut oil as moisturizer
This one is a little controversial as so many people swear by coconut oil as it was THE most trendy item in 2015/2016 and I personally love coconut oil and olive oil to use for oil cleansing only. The problem I have with these oils is when they are used as moisturizers. If it works for you great! But you must understand these oils may be breaking you out as they are non comedogenic, in order words they may clog your pores and cause break outs and blackheads. Bottom line: If these oils don’t break out out they’re not harming but if you’re wondering why you’re breaking out this may be the cause.
What to use instead: Use these oils for moisturizing your face! They are non comedogenic and provide a variety of many other skin benefits including anti aging!
Oily skin: PURA D’OR Moroccan Argan Oil
Dry skin : Organic Shea Butter By Sky Organics: Unrefined (Seriously does WONDERS for dry, flaky skin!)
The internet can be a blessing and a curse as we can get a lot of good, useful information from the internet and some really bad information too! Always remember to do research and read the ingredients of a product before you apply it to your face!
Take care of your skin!
